Many types of cargo can be transported by sea, including:

  1. General cargo
    The category of general cargo includes piece goods (products) that are transported in packaging. Boxes, bags, barrels, big bags, containers, bales, bags and other types of cargo packaging can be used as packaging.

To begin with, it is worth noting which cargoes are classified as general:

– structures and products made of reinforced concrete;

– metal products;

– non-ferrous metal ore, cement, concentrates;

– timber and lumber (logs, boards, beams, plywood, slabs);

– natural stone in slabs and blocks, etc.

In order for the cargo to be accepted for shipment, it must meet the following requirements:

– good condition of packaging, containers, locks;

– presence of sealing, markings, control tapes;

– preventing the leakage of liquids;

– compliance of packaging and containers with the contents transported in it;

– clear and clear warning signs in case of transportation of cargo with special conditions;

– ensuring the absence of moisture access to goods;

– organization of temperature and other conditions to prevent damage to goods;

– eliminating the appearance of unpleasant odors.

It is also worth noting that general cargo is transported without repacking from the point of departure to the destination (usually in containers). It is accompanied by a single set of accompanying documentation (if there is no change in the mode of transport), due to which the delivery time is significantly reduced.

  1. Oversized cargo

            Sea transportation of oversized and super-heavy cargo is carried out using specialized bulk carriers – super-heavy dry cargo ships equipped with lifting mechanisms and cranes capable of loading cargo weighing up to 700 tons or 1,400 tons with a total lifting capacity.

  In maritime logistics there are several definitions related to heavy or large cargo:

– Large cargo (LC). The characteristics of this cargo are tied to the limits of the rolling stock. They are: 14 m in length, 3.4 m in width and height.

– Heavy cargo (HC). Cargoes weighing more than 35 tons. At the same time, the dimensions may not fall under the definition of large-sized cargo. To transport them, you need a permit for the transportation of heavy cargo.

– Oversized heavy cargo (OHC). Accordingly, this type of cargo contains the characteristics of the previous two: it weighs more than 35 tons and has dimensions that fall under the definition of large dimensions.

– Unique large-sized heavy cargo (ULSH). Such cargo can be of any size and weigh more than one hundred tons. They are also often called project cargo, since the transportation of such cargo is carried out according to an individual transportation project.

Stages of delivery of oversized cargo:

– Selection of vehicles for transportation.

– Development of a route taking into account all possible obstacles along the route of the cargo.

– Preparation of documents.

– Coordination of the route with regulatory authorities. Failure to do so will result in penalties.

– Loading and transportation.

– Unloading.

Types of cargo transported:

– Construction projects;

– Special equipment;

– Production equipment;

– Installations for the oil sector;

– Wheeled and tracked vehicles;

– Metal structures;

– Industrial equipment;

– Frame buildings;

  1. Dangerous goods

The Rules for the Maritime Transportation of Dangerous Goods is an international agreement that thoroughly regulates the procedure and procedure for transporting dangerous goods by sea. The Russian Federation has signed and ratified this treaty, and its requirements are mandatory for implementation on the territory of the Russian Federation.

Dangerous goods include:

– explosive mixtures;

– liquefied and absorbed gas, compressed air, hydrogen, etc.;

– flammable liquids, heavy metals (mercury), toxic substances that change their state of aggregation to vapor;

– oxidants;

– uranium fluoride (the same substance that, after processing, serves as fuel for nuclear reactors);

– self-igniting elements;

– caustic acids, alkalis;

– radioactive liquids and waste, poisons, bacterial spores and viral capsules in test tubes (for removing vaccines, laboratory research, etc.).

When transporting dangerous goods by sea, special requirements for containers must be observed:

– containers must comply with international standards;

– each unit of packaging must be marked. (Exception: low-risk cargo);

– empty containers can either be recycled or processed for reuse;

– each container must have an inspection certificate (confirms their suitability for transportation).FCL

Full Container Load (FCL) – a type of transportation that implies that when ordering cargo transportation, a separate entire container is rented.

Features of FCL transportation:

– Cargo integrity (the cargo is sent completely, which ensures its integrity and protection from damage and loss);

– Fast delivery (does not require stops to load and unload cargo from several senders);

– Flexibility in scheduling (due to the fact that the cargo is sent directly from the sender to the recipient);

– Low probability of damage.

  1. LCL

Less Than Container Load (LCL) – When using this transportation method, you rent space in a container, i.e., goods from several senders are consolidated for joint shipment.

Delivery of this type is economical. Costs are reduced due to the fact that only the space in the container is paid for, and not the entire container. This method of transportation is convenient when sending small consignments, when delivery speed is not so important. LCL delivery costs are calculated based on the space occupied, cargo characteristics and transportation route.
